Self-Portrait with Black Felt Hat
Paul Cézanne painted roughly fifty self-portraits, including the one from the Kunstmuseum Bern, where he is about 40 years old. The artist’s gaze is self-confidently and seriously directed towards the observer. His face is lit up brightly from the right while his body stands out darkly against the just cursorily painted background. Cézanne’s credo that all shapes in nature can be traced back to the spheres, cones and cylinders is touched upon in his hat’s clear contours.
