The locals use a German term of endearment to describe these typical restaurants located on the first floor.
Information
Description
The city of St. Gallen is built on soft ground and the houses often had to be built on wooden piles. The ground floor rooms were dark, but the light on the first floor was much better. And so the first taverns were located there.
One of the most famous of these first-floor taverns is at Metzgergasse 5. Built after 1484, the "Zum goldenen Schäfli" is the city’s last remaining guild house.
