Intro
On the trail between the small Habsburg town of Bremgarten and the imposing memorial site of Muri, impressive architectural witnesses of the time bring back to life what was once Europe's most important aristocratic family and reveal exciting facts about prominent individuals of the Habsburg dynasty.
Description
The small medieval old town of Mellingen is well preserved and shaped like a flat triangle along the left bank of the Reuss. Today’s hike to Bremgarten, meanwhile, follows the right bank of the river and begins through the Risi forest reserve. Thanks to the undisturbed environment, nightingales and white-throated dippers have settled here. The wilderness area has also been used by the ETH Zurich for research purposes since 1969.
Alternating between sunny fields and the cooling shade of the forest, the path reaches the bridge to the Gnadenthal Monastery with its animal enclosures, gardens and restaurants. The history of the monastery goes back to the 13th century; the women of the community lived here by the rules of the Cistercian order. Today, it is the site of the canton’s largest care home, though the wide range of attractions – restaurants, gardens, animal enclosures, a museum and cultural events – also makes the monastery a popular excursion destination.
Walking through the unique, meandering natural river landscape, there's an impressive variety of plant and animal species which have found a habitat in the water meadows. The forest paths are also dotted with small sandy beaches and fire pits with beautiful views of the Reuss. Shortly before our destination, we reach the bend in the river at Eggenwil, an alluvial landscape about the size of 13 football pitches. Beavers have returned here and their work creates a habitat for amphibians. On mild spring evenings, hikers may even be lucky enough to hear the call of a tree frog. Arriving in Bremgarten, we pass the beautiful old town on our way to the station. It’s well worth making a detour to the wooden bridge with a view of the upper weir.
