The Aare Gorge at a glance
The Aare Gorge is one of the most popular destinations in the Bernese Oberland. Wooden walkways and tunnels lead through the 1,400-meter-long gorge, which is just 1 meter wide at its narrowest point but up to 200 meters deep. Even in summer, it is advisable to wear sturdy shoes and warm clothing.
What you can experience
Crossing the Aare Gorge (45–60 minutes)
Start at the western entrance in Meiringen or the eastern entrance in Innertkirchen and follow the well-maintained footbridge along the rock faces. Information boards along the way tell you about how the gorge was formed. Passing through tunnels and past spectacular limestone formations, you can experience the roaring waters up close – an unforgettable experience of nature.
- Good to know: The path from the west entrance to the middle of the gorge is barrier-free.
- Tip: In summer, the gorge is occasionally open until 10 p.m. – with evening lighting.
