Appenzeller Weg
Overview
Intro
The Hauptgasse in Appenzell, the old Reichsstrasse to Gontenbad, the Barfussweg on Moosboden to Jakobsbad and the Besinnungsweg leading through Alpine pastures and woodlands offer a rich variety of hiking experiences. Urnäsch beckons with its Appenzell Customs Museum.
Description
Typical Appenzell: the pretty main street, the painted panels and façades, decorated wooden window shutters on buildings and the huge village square. It is worthwhile planning a detour through the side streets of the cantonal capital before starting your hike.
You follow the hiking trail to Gontenbad, which is a village, hamlet and scattered settlement in the district of the same name. The route then continues along the “Barfussweg” (barefoot path) to Jakobsbad. If you tie your hiking boots to your rucksack, you can experience the unusual sensations of walking barefoot over meadows, in streams and on short gravel or asphalt sections. With or without your boots, you pass by the golf course, moorland and then continue over meadows and streams to Jakobsbad.
After the Capuchin monastery, the path climbs steeply and crosses a stretch of woodland. The view then opens up again over the typical hilly Appenzell landscape. After a brief descent, this stage ends in Urnäsch, which the river of the same name runs through. Your destination is also enchanting, with its picturesque village centre and many traditions, such as the descent of the cattle from the alpine pastures. Anyone particularly interested in this topic can end their hike with a visit to the Museum of Appenzeller Traditions.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
