Description
From the Gruyères area to the Three Lakes Region, the “Fribourg en diagonale” route takes you from Gruyères to Murten. Its first leg starts at Gruyères railway station. Around five minutes in, you will encounter the first highlight of the journey: the medieval town of Gruyères with its castle is bursting with charm. You can’t help but linger awhile in the cobblestone streets, amongst the pretty houses, little shops and restaurants. If you would like to get to know the place a little better, plan in an extra hour for the hike to make time.
The route passes beneath the castle. Following the Saane, you will soon arrive at the village of Broc. This village marks the boundary of the Gruyères Pays-d’Enhaut nature park, which stretches from the shores of Lake Geneva to the Gruyères region and Saanenland. Pre-Alpine landscapes, valley floors, Alpine meadows, forests and pastures bear testament to the centuries-old influence of the local population. The region is also the home of the Gruyère, L’Etivaz and Vacherin Fribourgeois traditional cheese varieties.
Leave Broc via the old stone bridge and head to the Bouleyres wood. Soon you will arrive at Bulle, where the route ends at the railway station. The second biggest town in the canton of Fribourg, it is also the region’s economic centre. As this leg is rather short, you might have enough time to visit the Musée gruérien, where you can find out more about the economic, religious and social history of the region and its inhabitants. On show at the museum are room interiors, documents, clothing and other objects dating back to between the 16th and 20th centuries.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
