Via Engiadina
Overview
Intro
From the Corviglia, St. Moritz’s local mountain, a narrow path leads along the steep hillside across alpine pastures high above the tree line. The view of the valley floor and the mountain peaks above Pontresina is breathtaking. The hike ends in the attractive village of Bever.
Description
The stage begins on the Corviglia, St. Moritz’s local mountain. At an altitude of 2,280 metres, you will find an adventure playground, a small alpine shop with a pizzeria as well as gondola lifts in all directions. Above the tree line here, you are on bare, stony pastures with a superb view of the surrounding mountain peaks and the valley.
An attractive trail takes you up the mountain to an altitude of almost 2,500 metres. Boulders are dotted here and there on the alpine meadows, and a narrow path leads between them, which is shared with the mountain bike trail up to just above Samedan.
From the scenic mountain trail, you can see the peaks above Pontresina on the other side of the valley. The path meanders along the steep hillside and leads back down to Alp Muntatsch. The first few trees are also to be found here. Beyond the cowshed at the end of Alp Muntatsch, the trail becomes a gravel road and branches off into the forest. The old stone pine and larch trees are enchanting.
There now follows a descent through the forest, into the valley to Samedan, with some major bends along the way. Besides the natural beauty of the Engadine, you will also see the airport, where the St. Moritz jet set flies in and out.
Arriving at the bottom of the valley, you cross the Beverin, and directly after this, you enter the attractive village of Bever, where the third stage of the Via Engiadina ends. The Val Bever stretches out westwards, and you arrive at the Albula Pass via the Fuorcla Crap Alv. You can reach Bergün by train through the Albula Tunnel and a few hair-raising bends.
