Vibrant: Juf
Overview
Intro
The ride between Thusis and Juf-Avers is like a demanding journey through time. After the busy traffic around Viamala Gorge, a long, steep ascent takes you to Juf-Avers, the highest (alt. 2126 m) settlement in Switzerland to be inhabited all year round.
Description
The setting-off point for this 41-kilometre ride to Juf-Avers is Thusis. The route follows imposing Viamala Gorge, where the rocky flanks rise up to 300 metres in the air and are, in places, just a few metres apart.
The greatest challenge here is the traffic. By way of compensation, complete seclusion awaits after Andeer, flanked by steep mountains dotted here and there with cows and sheep. Under a clear sky, the sun turns the rugged terrain golden. Headwinds can be a challenge here, quickly turning a four percent slope into one that feels more like six.
Juf-Avers (alt. 2126 m) and its hardy inhabitants are at the end of the long drawn-out road. The spirit of Switzerland in its most primitive guise feels very close here.
