This is Lugano
Lugano can be found in the south of Switzerland in the canton of Ticino. The Mediterranean lifestyle on
Lake Lugano, in combination with the surrounding mountains, make Lugano a popular excursion and holiday destination.
Discover Lugano
With its palm trees, parks such as
Parco Ciani and
Lake Lugano, the city exudes Italian charm. You can feel this as you stroll through the old city centre and the Via Nassa with its 270-metre-long arcades or the
Via Nassa. Every Tuesday and Friday, a market is held in the city centre. Enjoy the hustle and bustle alongside an espresso on the
Piazza della Riforma. Or why not take a detour to one of Lugano’s two local mountains –
Monte San Salvatore and
Monte Brè.
Lake Lugano (Lago di Lugano)
Lugano and
Lake Lugano are inextricably linked. The lake is situated at the southernmost tip of Ticino and extends further into Italy. A
boat trip will allow you to discover the beautiful villages around the lake. You can relax in one of the many
lidos in Lugano, Bissone, Castagnola or Melide. And it goes without saying that the lake is also a popular location for aquatic sports.
Mountains in and around Lugano
It’s what makes places like Lugano so special: you are in a city with palm trees, by the water, and all around you are mountains. You can see just how great that is from Monte Brè, Monte San Salvatore or Monte Generoso.
Monte Generoso is also known for its numerous hiking trails. And another hiking highlight is
Monte Tamaro.
Around Lugano
By boat from Lugano, you can reach
Gandria or
Morcote – both charming locations on the shores of Lake Lugano. In Melide, you will find
Swissminiatur, a miniature museum of Switzerland on a smaller scale. From the upper station of Monte Brè, it is well worth taking a walk to the artists’ village of Brè. Speaking of artists: in Montagnola, around 20 minutes from Lugano, is the
Hermann Hesse Museum.
