Nu bleu I (Blue Nude I)
Henri Matisse's Blue Nudes are his most famous cut-outs, and they are iconic items in the Beyeler collection. "Nu bleu I" is an image of a crouching woman: it is a wonderfully self-enclosed work that creates an impression of total coherence. There is a play on "inner" and "outer" in the shapes of this work, which conveys a sort of contemplation of the body – of intrinsically restful eroticism.
