Intro

Stand in front of "MaX", an 18-meter-long long-necked dinosaur and look into the eyes of a Stegosaurus. At the Aathal Dinosaur Museum in the canton of Zurich, you can see real skeletons, prepare fossils and spend the night among prehistoric giants.

The Aathal Dinosaur Museum at a glance

In a former spinning mill, real dinosaur skeletons from the Jurassic period stand on 2 floors. The Aathaler team excavated 6 of them themselves in Wyoming in the USA and prepared them on site. In addition, there is a marine crocodile, pterosaurs, an amber collection and ever-changing special exhibitions.

What to experience

Take a guided tour of the museum (1 hour)

Every first and last Sunday of the month, a public guided tour starts at 2 p.m. Let experts show you how bones in the rock are turned into a composite skeleton in an exhibition. On the guided tour, you will learn how the team in Wyoming excavated, which dinosaurs are here and how they lived.

  • Good to know: Private tours can be booked for groups of up to 25 people.
  • Tip: Night tours with flashlights are available for families with children from 7 years of age.

Preparing fossils yourself

Grab a tool with your children and lend a hand to a real find. In the course, the taxidermists will show you how to remove bones, ammonites and mussels from the rock layer by layer. This takes patience and steady hands, but in the end you hold your own fossil in your hands.

  • Good to know: You don't need any previous knowledge, you will learn the methods on site.

Spend a night at the museum

Stay with your children where no one else is allowed to stay. You roll out the sleeping bags between the skeletons and on the scary tour with the flashlight, the little ones learn from the guide what the dinosaurs are up to at night. When the lights go out, you are alone with the giants.

  • Tip: Book early, the overnight stays are very popular with families.
