The Space Race in 70 Years of Editorial Cartoons

From Sputnik to Artemis, from Méliès to Kubrick, from Sinatra to Bowie, space has drawn explorers, captivated imaginations, and enchanted hearts. For over 70 years, the space race has continued to stir nations and minds. Press cartoons have accompanied and continue to chronicle the space race. Like so many constellations—critical, ironic, allegorical, playful—they illuminate the cosmos with their brilliant ideas.

To mark the return to the Moon with the Artemis mission and the upcoming solar eclipse this summer, the Maison du Dessin de Presse invites you on a summer journey to the Moon and beyond, through the portholes of the hundred or so drawings on display—from the first step on the Moon to space tourism, covering technical challenges, competition between nations, the figures of our astronauts, and women in space, including two drawings that traveled aboard Discovery.

In all, 50 press cartoonists from several countries—primarily the United States and Switzerland—enthusiastically contributed to this exploration of our space.
