There are some 72 fountains in Biel with the oldest being located in the Old Town. They supply drinking water and some have their source in the spring used in Roman times.

Gerechtigkeitsbrunnen (Fountain of Justice): This is a symbol of the jurisdiction of the city.
Venner Fountain (Banner Carrier Fountain): This fountain is 450 years old. The banner carrier on the fountain used to signify the right of the city to deploy its own troops to protect the Lord Bishop of Basel, the allied Bernese and the Swiss Confederates in case of war.
