Irchel Park
Overview
Intro
Irchelpark is an ideal place to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and enjoy being surrounded by nature. Trees and bushes shield this relaxing retreat from the streets surrounding it. It’s not uncommon to cross paths with students of the University of Zurich’s Irchel Campus here. The institution’s buildings are set in an enchanting location in the upper part of the park.
The park was built in the early 1980s and has since become a popular recreational area in the city of Zurich. With around 32 hectares, it is probably the largest of Switzerland’s younger parks and contrasts strongly with traditional city parks, which mostly follow clear lines.
In the lower part of the park, there is an artificial lake, which is home to many fish, birds and ducks, as well as open grasslands and an expansive play area. Nature has intentionally been left plenty of room to run wild.
The topography is livened up by large hills, creating a distinction between landscapes. In contrast to the technical buildings of the university, natural building materials and wild growth shape the park.
