Intro

Superb views of Luzern and its outlying districts from Sonnenberg. Then the Ränggschlucht gorge offers an insight into the geology of the region. The last section to Malters lets you follow in the footsteps of St. James.

Description

Malters is situated between Lucerne and Wolhusen, directly on the banks of the Kleine Emme and at the foot of Mount Pilatus. The alpine panorama trail shares the section up to Wolhusen with the Emme riverbank trail, which proceeds to Sörenberg, and with the long-distance St. James' Way which continues from Werthenstein to Willisau.

The hiking trail follows the Kleine Emme. Shortly before Ettisbühl, you can see the floodwater retention facility that was built after the devastating floods of 2005. Shortly afterwards, you reach the weir at Ettisbühl. Water power has been used here since 1649. In 1866, the Neumühle mill was expanded to three water wheels before these were replaced by a turbine in 1882. In 1995, the plant was shut down, and in 2011 the new power station was put into operation.

Continuing along the banks of the Emme and past the industrial zone of Schachen, the pilgrimage church and Franciscan monastery of Werthenstein can be seen from a distance. After about two hours, you reach the hill on which the impressive monastery complex was built. Several tens of thousands of people came here during the pilgrimage heydays in the 17th/18th century.

After crossing the Kleine Emme on the old wooden bridge, the Way of St. James and the alpine panorama trail separate. After a little more than half an hour, the hike ends in Wolhusen. With less than three hours, the twelfth stage is the second shortest of the alpine panorama trail, which is more than 500 kilometres long.
