Chaumont Tour
Overview
Intro
This route is named after the mountain towering above Neuchâtel. The Chaumont offers a splendid view over three lakes and the alps. The tour leads through fields, vineyards and forests.
Description
The route starts at the train station of the vinicultural village of Cressier. The first section leads directly to the next vine-growing village, Cornaux, on a relatively flat stretch. It then crosses the rural and quiet villages of Wavre and Marin before arriving in St-Blaise, beautifully situated between the lake and the vineyards. Next comes Hauterive with its small historic centre and La Coudre. Here, there’s a cable car up to the Chaumont. On the saddle, however, you continue with the power of your own muscles: a little above the town of Neuchâtel, the more athletic and strenuous part of this circular tour begins at Le Plan. The ascent leads through the forest on a moderately busy road to the Grand Chaumont.
As you climb up, the view of Lake Neuchâtel is ever so fabulous. Once you arrive at the top, a magnificent panorama with Lake Neuchâtel, Lake Bienne and Lake Morat awaits you. The best place to enjoy the view is from the 60-metre-high panorama tower. On a clear day, the view reaches as far as the highest alpine peaks: Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau and Mont Blanc.
After a break at the top, a pleasant, easy forest path follows. Now it's time to enjoy the ride even more, because it's all downhill. Shortly after Enges, at the hamlet of Frochaux, the descent slowly comes to an end. The last section leads back to Cressier, the starting point. If you feel like it, you can go on the "Viti Tour" here. On this educational trail, you will learn more about the vineyards of Neuchâtel and their different grape varieties.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
