Fronalp Tour
Overview
Intro
A bike tour offering fabulous views of the well-known Muotathal valley and the Schwyz basin. It includes a beautiful climb from Muotathal to Alp Wannen and super downhill stretches to the bottom of the Schwyz/Schlattli-Stoos funicular.
Description
This challenging bike tour begins at the valley station of the Stoos railway, the steepest funicular in the world. Its eye-catching spherical cabins adjust to the incline so that you remain upright. However, to scale the mountain you’ll need pure muscle power: a little further into the pristine, tranquil Muotathal Valley, after crossing the river, a long but not too steep ascent begins. The Wissenwand track then leads up through attractive forests and along lush meadows to the Alp Wannen. This is embedded in the impressive mountains of Central Switzerland. From here to the next Alp, a steep ascent to a narrow gravel and field path follows.
The descent begins at Alp Laubgarten: the field path is steep in parts until you reach Geibützen. On the descent along a gravel track that follows, the panorama is ever-changing and invites you to stop every once in a while. Particularly worthwhile is a break at the Alpine cheese dairy located just a stone's throw from the bike path. It's the ideal place to relax, recover and savour the silence of the mountain world.
On well-maintained and wide Alpine roads, you soon pass the Stoos railway mountain station, followed by the cable car that travels down to Morschach. Those who wish to can of course end the tour here. But that would be a mistake: from this point, the route winds westwards along the steep forest slope and then down several hairpin bends to the Nägelisgärtli inn. A tarmac road via Oberschönenbuch and then field paths take you to the Suvorov Bridge. The bridge is a monument to the Russian General Suvorov, who marched his troops into Muotathal in 1799. The Muota River itself has carved deep into the rock here. A gentle climb and you have reached your destination at the Stoos railway.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
