Gitschenen Trail
Overview
Intro
The snowshoe hiking tour, with a view of the Gitschener mountain panorama, leads across open terrain and through woodland. The circuit over the alp high above the Isenthal is suitable for beginners.
Description
Uri-Rotstock, Älpler, Maisander and Brisen - these four striking peaks dominate the view from Gitschenen, a sunny alpine terrace. Inhabited year-round, this alp is reached by gondola from St. Jakob, the last PostBus stop in the valley Isenthal.
The route leads straight from the mountain station via Chneuwis and the mountain station of the ski-lift to Rüteli and Vordere Schrindi. Just a few metres further is the lookout point, which affords views into the Isenthal and the surrounding mountain scenery. The trail continues slightly downhill to the turning point of the tour. From here it is a leisurely walk through the forest back to the cable car station. Hiking in the snow-covered scenery on Gitschenen is a real experience. With a little luck, hikers may see roe deer, chamois or snow hares. "Night people" are catered for as well: the tour can be hiked at night when there is a full moon.
Before returning to the valley, it is worth making a brief stop on the alp: right next to the cableway station is a mountain inn serving dishes prepared from regional products. For an opportunity for tranquil reflection, visitors can make a detour to the ecumenical Betrufkapelle («prayer-call chapel»): designed by architect Kurt Stalder and fitting harmoniously into the mountain scenery, the chapel’s triangular outline evokes the «Folle», the funnel used to call out the traditional alpine blessing. The pointed corner of the tower points directly towards the Zingel slope of the Risetenstock, from which, not infrequently, avalanches thunder into the valley.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
