Description
Start and finish of the round-path is Glarus railway station. With only 5990 inhabitants and mere altitude of 470m, Glarus still boasts being a mountainous city; with rectangular streets on a par with those of New York. And the impressive industrial history of the Glarnerland is closely linked to many other main towns. All began with the establishment of the first printing works in the valley in 1740, as well as Switzerland’s first strike as Glarus grew rapidly. 1859 saw the first train arrive here; and from 1800 until the fire of 1861, the population had doubled.
The authorities were used to construction work as new buildings were planned to replace those in ashes – and on completion, Glarus showed even clearer signs of being the canton’s capital - as well as industrial and administrative hub. On the Zaunplatz, place of venue for annual community meetings, social history continues to be written –and today, Glarus is a service centre with offers to suit all; where observant eyes witness both old and new in and around the town.
Important places of production before the doors to Zurich extend both left and right in Linthe. In addition to again growth in paper and textile industries, on a small area, prominent representatives in the field of machines, tools and metal and electro industries are also viewed.
In contrast to the inhabited areas of Ennenda and Mitlödi, natural, untouched landscapes also characterise Switzerland’s smallest capital cantonal town; and a canton that despite its small size, has greatly contributed to social and city services through the ages.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
