This mountain bike tour across the Gibidum Pass through the wild Nanztal Valley to Brig is an all-mountain trail with much variety and excellent panoramic views of the Bernese and Valais Alps. The route offers much scenery and a long downhill ride of about 1,500 altitude meters.
Description
Gspon is located on a sun-drenched terrace high above the Saas Valley. The landmarks of this car-free hamlet are St. Anna Chapel and Europe’s highest soccer field. The village at 1899 m can be reached by gondola from Stalden in just a few minutes. A beautiful trail leads from the station along the mountain’s contour lines in the direction of Gibidum Pass. On the way through the Sädolwald forest preserve with its larch and pine trees the bikers have to use quite a bit of energy to cycle up two fairly steep climbs.
On the Gibidum Pass the views on the plateau open up over the Valais and Bernese Alps. The nearby Gibidum Lake is a lovely place to stop for a while and enjoy the environment. The lake is a water reservoir and at the same time it feeds the well-known Heido channel. The latter irrigates the meadows and the famous Heida vineyards. A forest road leads from the highest point of the tour down into the wild and ancient Nanztal Valley and continues to the lush Nidristi Alp. It then follows the Gamsa mountain stream again, which flows into the Rhone near Gamsen. The long section ending just before Schratt is a wide and pleasant trail.
After refilling the water bottle at the wooden fountain, the route changes to a long enduro trail after a few meters. The first part of this section to above Brig-Glis is very exposed in one place (reduce the speed). Afterwards it is easy, fast and clear and crosses the road several times. Another landmark, the Stockalper Palace, is located in Brig-Glis where numerous dining opportunities are available to end the day in delightful surroundings.
