Oberalp Bike
Overview
Intro
The circular bike route from Sedrun to the Maighels Hut first leads straight to the source of the Rhine before crossing the Oberalp Pass and returning to Sedrun. Pleasant resting areas, SAC Huts and restaurants along the route entice you to take a break.
Description
The circular route starts at the Sedrun municipal centre. You ride along good trails on the opposite side of the valley to Sedrun, for a long time through the forest, alongside the young River Rhine all the way to its source. Along the way: the hamlets of Selva and Tschamutt, in between the Sedrun golf course with its luminous green lawn and magnificent view of the mountainous backdrop with three-thousand-metre peaks.
Later, the route winds around the Calmut quarry where soapstone is mined. Uphill along the Oberalp pass stream towards the lake, several side streams are crossed. The summit of the pass is situated at 2044 m. a. s. l. and connects the cantons of Graubünden and Uri. Far away from any ocean, you can find the only lighthouse in the alps right here. It symbolises the source of the Rhine which rises nearby. The 10-metre-high tourist attraction is a replica of a real lighthouse that once stood in Rotterdam at the mouth of the Rhine.
After the hustle and bustle on the Oberalp pass, you enter the secluded Val Val. Alternating up and down, three more valleys follow with Val Giuf, Val Mila and Val Strem. They are all known for their rich mineral deposits. Your destination is once again Sedrun, the main village of Tujetsch. Riders who continue to the hamlet of Surrein are rewarded with a refreshing dip in the Lag da Claus bathing lake.
