Intro
A bike tour for aficionados on the south side of Lake Walen, with the most magnificent views of the fjord-like lake and the commanding Churfirsten Mountains, which tower steeply on the other side of the lake.
Description
The tour starts in the small port and market town of Walenstadt. The route briefly leads across the training area of the Swiss Army, before climbing and taking you on beautiful paths behind the prominent «Raischibe» hill. The initial ascent is finished as the views of Lake Walen open up on the right.
Now the route takes you up and down through forests, meadows and farmsteads – in this section almost non-stop on unmade roads. En route Lake Walen and the Churfirsten Mountains keep coming into view, offering unparalleled panoramas.
Once you have reached the highest point, an unmade road forks to the left, taking you down a steep slope into the valley 400 m below – a test for both cyclists and brakes. The crossing of the Murgbach is followed by a stretch of leisurely coasting along the lakeshore back to Walenstadt. Along the way, the lidos in Murg, Unterterzen and Mols invite you to take a refreshing splash in the lake.
