Intro

Panoramic views towards Lake Zurich and the Alpine foothills accompany hikers along the Albis chain to the Albishorn. In Ebertswil, the milk soup stone commemorates the Kappel milk soup of 1529, an important event in Swiss history. The trail then follows the old Lorze river from Baar to Zug.

Description

The Albis Pass was once the main gateway from Zurich to Central Switzerland. It was being used to access the Gotthard Pass as far back as the 13th century and, from 1790 onwards, for stagecoaches too. Only a few moments after setting off, you will reach Zurich’s Sihlwald Nature Discovery Park, a popular destination where animals and plants live in unspoiled habitats near the city. A scenic route leads to the Hochwacht mountain with a view over Lake Türler, popular with campers and swimmers. The next viewpoint on the route is the Albishorn. The view of shimmering Lake Zurich, the city and the surrounding mountains is breathtaking.

As you continue further along the path, Lake Zug will soon come into sight. Then it will be time for the descent, past the handsome timber-frame houses at Husertal and onwards to Ebertswil. Just past the village, the Milchsuppenstein is located around 200 metres from the path. In 1529, this is where the conflict between the Catholic and Reformed localities of the Old Swiss Confederacy came to a head. Glarus magistrate Hans Aebli managed to stop a fight from breaking out by intervening. Legend has it that the conflict was averted in Ebertswil by the two sides sharing milk soup together.

Once you are through the Deinikerwald woodland, most of the elevation will be behind you. As you walk along the Littbach stream and river Lorze, the outskirts of Baar will begin to come into view. It is hard to imagine, but at this point along the Lorze, where there is barely a house to be seen for miles around, there were once plans to build a metropolis with over a million inhabitants. In 1865, the ambitious urban vision of St. Europ envisaged a city of 1.2 million people within a space of just 108 km2. As it happens, the final stretch of the route is somewhat more idyllic than those metropolitan dreams. Along the old river Lorze, you will reach the beautiful Lake Zug and, a short while after that, Zug railway station, where this fascinating walk ends.

An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
