Intro

The Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen is the most famous nature destination in Switzerland. Huge masses of water plunge down the rocks. You can experience the spectacle from Laufen Castle, from viewing platforms or on a boat trip.

The Rhine Falls at a glance

It is imposing, the Rhine Falls: Over a width of 150 meters, several hundred cubic meters of water thunder 23 meters into the depths every second. The Rhine Falls is the largest waterfall in Europe. Viewing platforms, hiking trails and boat trips offer you different views of the natural phenomenon. The Rhine Falls are freely accessible all year round.

What to experience

Observation decks

The panorama trail takes you from Laufen Castle down to the Rhine Falls. From the Belvedere platform, the waterfall stretches out in front of you in its entire width. You can reach the Känzeli and Fischetz platforms via stairs – both directly above the roaring masses of water, so you can feel the spray. You can take the panoramic lift back to the visitor centre.

  • Good to know: The Panoramaweg and the Belvedere platform are barrier-free.
  • Tip: Bring a rain cape – you'll get wet from the spray on the lower platforms.

Boat trips (15-30 minutes)

The boats start from the northern shore to the Rhine Falls. The most popular tour is the rock ride: The boat will take you to the middle rock, where you can disembark and ascend via stairs to the observation deck. The entire journey, including the stopover, takes about 30 minutes. During the 15-minute round trip, you will also experience the waterfall up close.
