Amore & Vendetta
Overview
Intro
Baroque arias from Vivaldi to Scarlatti, featuring contralto Bendetta Mazzucato and the La Cetra Baroque Orchestra of Basel
This program is a moving tribute by contralto Benedetta Mazzucato, who pays homage to the female spirit and the emotional world of women. Each of the selected Baroque arias represents a specific emotion—ranging from love to anger, revenge, self-sacrifice, and the maternal instinct. Through this, Mazzucato also wishes to commemorate her female ancestors—whether real or imaginary—who inspired her and have always accompanied her on her journey. She also calls the concert “a hymn to truth, to sincerity, and to the unvarnished honesty of the human heart.” The arias sung by Benedetta Mazzucato are primarily from operas by Handel and Vivaldi, beginning with Bradamante’s furious revenge aria “Vorrei vendicarmi” from *Alcina*. The same Bradamante expresses loyalty, steadfastness, and hope in “Io son ne’ lacci tuoi” from Vivaldi’s *Orlando Furioso*. In contrast, Arsilda’s heart is filled with worry and sorrow in “Lo sento in questo seno,” while Galatea seeks comfort in “Se m’ami, o caro.” “Saprà delle mie offese” from Handel’s *Serse* once again evokes the theme of revenge. “Così potessi anch’io” is a longer, classical love lament by Alcina, again from Vivaldi’s *Orlando Furioso*. Finally, in “Par che mi nasca in seno” from Handel’s *Tamerlano*, Irene finds a glimmer of hope amidst her heartbreak. The program is a moving portrait of various female characters and emotional states—a journey into the innermost depths of the heart. On this journey, Benedetta Mazzucato is accompanied by the La Cetra Baroque Orchestra under the direction of Andrea Marcon.
