Pretty as a picture

It is perhaps true that the word “picturesque” is often used too freely, but it really does apply to the former fishing village of Gandria. Waking up in the village with the pretty, colourful houses that seem to cling to the mountain and looking out over Lake Lugano with a cup of espresso is a little slice of paradise. Gandria entices you to explore its narrow streets and discover restaurants serving local specialties. There is an enchanting olive grove just above the lake. This is the only place in the whole of Switzerland to produce olive oil. The product is a genuine rarity.

Southern flair at the market

After an espresso and little olive oil tasting, head to the local market in the centre of Lugano. Local charcuterie, speciality breads and cheese from all over the region are particularly popular. The city’s Mediterranean flair is almost tangible as you make your way through the market.

Wandering onwards into the old town, you will turn onto Via Nassa. A bustling street that is known for its boutiques. One street further on is an exclusive grocery shop. This is where the locals meet to stock up on fresh fruit and vegetables. A little further on, the glorious aroma of salami fills the air. This is the home of a famous delicatessen. The family-owned shop has made a name for itself with its exquisite meat specialities. The large salamis that hang under the arches are a popular subject for photographers.

Drinks on the magnificent Piazza della Riforma

Whether after work or an unforgettable trip to Gandria, people in the Lugano region often head to the Piazza della Riforma at the end of the day. It is the place to come together in Switzerland’s southernmost city. Young and old celebrate life on the magnificent square – preferably with a white Merlot from the local vineyards.

The main square boasts numerous cafés and restaurants.
