Intro

Elaborately decorated church in Lavin; Inn, wood-bridge crossing to the peaceful woods and meadows by Susch – and the famous Foura Baldirun forest area. Foura Baldirun made history as a place of refuge in the war years, and Güstizia as a place of justice. Stately Zernez is just in the distance.

Description

The route begins in the Schellen-Ursli village of Guarda, with fantastic panoramic views of the mountains. In the traffic-free "most beautiful end of the world", the well-kept and richly decorated Engadine houses and the silence of the mountains are striking.

While Guarda sits high above the Inn, Lavin was built on the valley floor. The village of 213 inhabitants is reached first on asphalt and then on a gravel road. You pass the unspoilt Val Tuoi and briefly follow the stony La Clozza mountain stream. The views of the surrounding mountain scenery are delightful.

Lavin is connected to Prättigau by the 19-kilometre Vereina railway tunnel. The Jakobus frescoes in the pretty church are well worth a look. The village was rebuilt in Italian style after a fire in 1869, with spacious streets, squares, and impressive palazzo-style houses.

The route crosses the Inn over a covered wooden bridge and leaves the settlement area of Lavin. On the other side of the valley, continue on a gravel road through the well-kept countryside into the forest. Here, on the slopes of the Piz Mezdi, you will find several natural caves. The people of the surrounding villages took refuge in them when General Baldiron conquered the Lower Engadine for the Habsburgs in a bloody campaign in September 1622. The boulders are overgrown with moss, and many caves are ice-covered. The ground here is unpredictable, as you can sink deep on the rotten trunks and in the moss.

Out of the forest, the trail leads across agricultural fields down to the Inn River and the village of Susch. It lies at the foot of the Flüela Pass, which connects the Lower Engadine with Davos. Striking towers in the centre and the Rohan Fortress are among the main sights of this mountain-pass village, which flourished in the age of muleteers and stagecoaches.

Continue on a beautiful path right along the river bank to Fuorcha. Trees and bushes provide shade along the riverbank and make for cosy rest areas. Fields line the left side of the path, and on the other side of the Inn runs the pass road to the south.

A beautiful forest trail now leads across the western slope of Piz Sursassa. In Fuorcha, the trail turns into a gravel road, and from Chasuot, it continues on asphalt to the finish in Zernez, the gateway to the Swiss National Park. Covering 170 square kilometres, it is the largest nature reserve in Switzerland and offers a unique wealth of Alpine flora and fauna.
