Intro

The first stop is Alp Medergen, a former Walser alp with mountain tavern. The path then narrows to a mountain trail with the “Tritt” as a key point. At the end of the stage, views deep down to Davos.

Description

The famous holiday resort of Arosa is nestled at the end of the romantic valley of Schanfigg. Its location in a basin means it gets plenty of sun. The long hike to Davos starts at the Obersee lake. Untersee, the second lake on the journey, is just a few metres further along. People come to this lake from Arosa to go swimming, and it even has it a little sandy beach. As you approach the valley, the Isel reservoir then brings you to your third lake.

The descent is followed by a climb: going uphill through the beautiful Tiejer wood, you will reach Alp Medergen, a former Walser village, after around two and half hours. The Walser people, who came from Upper Valais to settle the Alps from the late middle ages onwards, put their animals out to pasture here in summer and built houses that are still well preserved to this day.

Next you will continue through the meadows to Seejiboden. The views of the Schanfigger Höhenweg opposite and the slopes of the Chüpfenflue and Mederger Flue mountains are fantastic. A little further on, you will reach your main landmark: a long metal stairway and steps in the rock will be your guide across the spectacular “Tritt”. Once you have surmounted this steep section, the scenery changes: the grey jagged rock face gives way to brilliant green. Once you are over Latschüelfurggli, the higher ground will be behind you. The pass between Schanfigg and Davos was once a major crossing for trade in cattle and goods, as well as for passenger transport between the two valleys.

The descent to the Schatzalp starts here, with views of the Alps around Davos accompanying you all the way. The famous Schatzalp hotel was opened in 1900. In those days, patients paid a fortune to stay in the sanatorium here. No expense was spared in its construction: the luxury rooms had clawfoot baths with heated rims. Even the sinks were heated and the food was served on heated tables to prevent it from going cold for the bedridden patients. The Art Nouveau architecture has been preserved over the years, and the hotel has been renovated to keep the impression of a lavish sanatorium.

The final section of 45 minutes or so passes through the Rütiwald down to Davos Platz. If you want to, you can also take the cog railway for this final stretch. Over 12,000 people live in Davos, with more than half of them based in the Davos Platz settlement, one of six districts that merged to form the political municipality of Davos in 2018.
