This nostalgic Art Nouveau style building with its Belle Époque atmosphere, already described in Thomas Mann's book "Zauberberg" [Magic Mountain], opened its doors in 1900 as a luxury sanatorium and was later converted to a mountain hotel. The Palazzo Salis was built in 1629 by the knight Baptista von Salis, converted into a guest house in 1876 and awarded the distinction of Historic Hotel of the Year in 1998. The wildly romantic garden with its unique display of summer flowers won an award in 2009.

This hotel is situated at the end of an historic mule track, which is the Ofen Pass road today. After it had stood empty for more than 100 years, the Schweizer family took it over in 1954 and today the second generation of Schweizers runs this hotel.
