This bronze figure is the first in a series of nine standing women that the artist created in 1956 for the Venice Biennale. She looks lonely, haggard and fragile but also upright and self-confident. Alberto Giacometti created with this a human image that is timeless and contemporary at the same time. It represents people marked by war who have not lost hope nevertheless.
