Intro

The oldest Upper Engadine funicular takes you from Punt Muragl to the Muottas Muragl mountain station in 10 minutes. At the top you can see the Upper Engadine lakes and the Bernina massif. In winter, a rapid toboggan run leads from here into the valley.

The Muottas Muragl funicular at a glance

The funicular has been running on the Muottas Muragl since 1907. At 2456 meters, the view extends over the lakes of St. Moritz and Silvaplana to the Bernina massif. The mountain station with hotel, restaurant and playground is the starting point for hikes or rapid sleigh rides. The lift is closed for a few weeks after Easter and from October onwards.

What to experience

Drive up the mountain in the red car (10 minutes)

The red cars have been part of the railway for decades and run every 30 minutes in shuttle service: If one goes up, the other comes towards you. They cross at a short evasion in the middle. The drive was renewed several times, but the cars retained their character. At the top you are in front of Piz Bernina and Piz Palü.

  • Good to know: From Samedan and Pontresina, train and bus travel to the Punt Muragl valley station.
  • Tip: In summer, the funicular runs until 11 pm, ideal for sunset.

Hiking on the Philosopher's Path (45 minutes)

From the mountain station, the circular trail leads 2 kilometres over the hills above Val Muragl. Along the way, you will encounter quotes from thinkers and poets such as Erich Kästner, Meta von Salis and Annemarie Schwarzenbach on boards. Wooden benches invite you to sit and think, with a view of the lakes in the valley.

  • Good to know: The trail is accessible in summer and winter.
  • Tip: Put on good shoes, the first section is steeply uphill.

Tobogganing to Punt Muragl (20 minutes)

From the mountain station, the fast-paced toboggan run leads over 4.2 kilometres and 718 metres in altitude down into the valley to Punt Muragl. With 20 curves, it is one of the most demanding toboggan runs in the Engadine. It is not suitable for small children. You can rent a sledge and helmet at the valley station.

  • Good to know: Depending on the snow, the track is open until 4 p.m. from December to March.
  • Tip: Wear sturdy winter shoes and a helmet.
