Jakobsweg Graubünden
Overview
Intro
The Scalettapass (scaletta = ladder): used since the Bronze Ages as merchants’ path until the 1971 opening of the Flüelapass. And Vallember – name of the wildly gushing stream by the picturesque Susauna hamlet. Challenging path to the impressive Alp Funtauna, and pass-way to Dürrboden.
Description
In the Upper Engadin by the Inn river and near to the national park lies the municipality of S-chanf. Passing by traditional Engadin houses, you soon reach Chapella. A gravel road proceeds along the Vallember stream. The deeper you go into Tal Susauna, the more the landscape reminds you of Canada: secluded, idyllic and beautiful. You have to complete approximately 200 metres of elevation gain before you get to Alp Pignaint, and it’s roughly the same on top of this to Alp Funtauna.
You’ll sometimes see around a dozen horses grazing here on the Alp – you’ll be hard pressed to find a scene more befitting a postcard. The Susauna valley opens up with wide-ranging views of Val Funtauna, with the mountains Piz Murtelet and Piz Fourun in the background. The gravel road makes way for a trail and becomes steeper. Scaletta means ladder, but it’s not as steep as the name suggests. Nevertheless, the air does begin to get a little thinner. At an altitude of 2,605 metres, you reach the Scaletta Pass, which connects the Landwasser valley with the Engadin.
For nearly 200 years, this pass had a fierce rivalry with the Flüela Pass. The main point of contention surrounded maintenance responsibilities during winter. As a result, either the Flüela or the Scaletta Pass remained closed for years and even decades at a time.
The descent now follows. On the left is the Seeböde. Almost all the streams from the opposite mountains flow into this small lake, and the Dischmabach stream springs from it too. Shortly afterwards, you can see down into the Dischma Valley and towards the end of the stage in Dürrboden, which you reach around an hour later. Here, you can either stay overnight in a hotel, take the bus to nearby Davos or, of course, for those with excellent stamina, start the next leg.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
