Loipe Hochalpines Institut Ftan
Overview
Intro
A challenging, but beautifully situated cross-country ski trail in the rolling terrain near Ftan. The trail leads around Muot Pednal over varied terrain and offers gorgeous views of the Lower Engadin Dolomites.
Description
Ftan is a charming village, situated slightly elevated in the middle of the Lower Engadin. The sun rises early here, making the area an optimal spot for morning tours. Near Kinderland Sainas and about 300 m from the PostBus stop Ftan, cumün in the direction of the western end of the village, you can step into your cross-country skis. First, the trail crosses a rather flat area and leads to the car park at the level of Hotel Paradies. The actual trail begins just across the road.
For a short while, the trail first passes through the forest and then quickly gains altitude until you reach the Hochalpines Institut Ftan (HIF), an international school and sports academy. The secondary school was founded in 1793 and is probably the oldest private school in the Canton Graubünden. Some successful athletes have attended the school and also trained here. You often come across junior athletes from the sports academy along the way. Enjoy the winter scenery and the attractive environment up on the plateau.
The downhill sections of the cross-country ski trail are a lot of fun, but quite challenging. Although the altitude difference of about 200 meters seems a bit daunting at first glance, the trail is an amazing experience for both skating and classic cross-country skiers. The first, lower part of the trail is less steep and floodlit for evening use and for training. The ski trail is very popular, particularly with the locals.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
