Intro
The Nino Schurter Bike route shows Val Lumnezia from its most beautiful side. On delightful, varied trails around the Olympic and world champion's home village, you experience the fascination of mountain biking, crossing through wild gorges, remote villages and sunny plateaus.
Description
The starting point of this circular tour is the village of Vella, on the gently sloping terrace at the foot of the Mundaun chain. While the village centre with its magnificent stone houses is impressive, the first descent is just around the corner. The trail descends into the valley through meadows and forests. Again and again, fantastic views open up over Val Lumnezia with its sunny mountain slopes and hidden side valleys.
After a short section on the road, the World Cup-worthy Uphill Trail takes you to Tersnaus, the home village of Olympic and world champion Nino Schurter. Technical biking enthusiasts will get their money's worth here. A multitude of tight bends is the main attraction of the ascent to the spectacular Val da Tersnaus suspension bridge. Once you reach the village of Tersnaus, it's worth stopping for a breather and taking in the stunning mountain scenery. The views of the Mundaun chain are fantastic. As soon as you leave the village, a challenging single trail with a few steep sections begins. It can be bypassed on the road below the trail. The next kilometres follow the village road to Surcasti, situated on a moraine. Here begins a splendid ascent across the meadows of the sun-kissed high plateau. Old stables and mountain pastures are scattered over the gentle, grassy slopes, while the views extend over the peaks of Piz Tgiertschen, Piz Cavel and Piz Gren at the end of the valley.
In Silgin, the second suspension bridge awaits, stretching impressively between the rock faces. A little later, you reach Vrin, the last village in Val Lumnezia. Among its main attractions are the modern wood-knitted houses by Vrin architect Gion A. Caminada, for which the village was awarded the Wakker Prize.
The trail continues gently up and down along the sunny side of Val Lumnezia. Easy trails and gravel roads lead to the Davos Munts bathing lake, where you can dip your feet in the cool water. On the way back to Vella, you are just coasting along. It's worth taking a look back. At the end of the valley, the pyramid-like peak of Piz Terri casts its shadow.
