Description
The third leg of the Obwaldner Höhenweg is short and sweet, with around two and a half hours of walking. In total, it climbs 100 metres of altitude and drops down 1,000 metres. You can reach the start at the Schönbüel mountain hotel from the Brienzer Rothorn mountain, Turren, Glaubenbielen pass or the Brünig Pass. If you stay the night here, you will get the chance to savour the magical evenings and mornings, with panoramic views for everyone to enjoy.
Below the summit of Höch Gumme, the route first leads to the Gibel mountain. The views of the brilliant blue Lake Brienz, the 4,000-metre peaks of Bern and Central Switzerland are spectacular. A varied route along the ridge followed by a path will lead you across the Scheidegg and below the Wilerhorn mountain. You can of course plan in a climb to a summit if you wish.
The route described climbs via Fluemeder across rough pastures to the hamlet of Maiensäss. At the Schäriwald wood, the path gives way to a gravel road. Once you have passed Älpeli, you will arrive at your final destination for this leg at the Brünig Pass a short while later. This used to be part of the route from Central Switzerland to northern Italy, which at that time still led over the Grimsel Pass and Gries Pass. At just 1,002 metres above sea level, this pass can also be crossed by rail. The first trains between Alpnachstad and Brienz ran in 1888. The narrow-gauge railway manages some of the climbs along the way using cogwheels. The pass road over the Brünig is open all year and often heavily used, especially by motorcyclists.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
