Overview
Intro
A small steep asphalt road leads out of Toggenburg to Vorder Höhi, with wonderful views of the rugged Glarner Alps. The racy descent leads to the shores of the glistening, deep-blue Walensee.
Description
The village of Stein is nestled between the Alpstein, Churfirsten and Speer, with the river Thur flowing through it. After around one and a half kilometres along Hauptstrasse, it’s worth taking a short detour to the stone bridge over the river. The Thur rushes rapidly through the gorge. After the route branches off, you will start the ascent to Vorder Höhi. Following the murmur of the Leistbach and Statthalterbach streams to begin with, you will then head ever deeper into deciduous woodland along a surfaced road. There are over 600 metres in altitude gain to cover before you reach the pass.
Once you’ve arrived at the top, your hard work will be rewarded: the views of the Glarus Alps are magnificent. Make sure to put your glasses and windbreaker on for the bracing descent to Amden. This farming village sits atop a beautiful sunny terrace, where the Alpine views are joined by the Linth plain and Lake Walen. It’s a steep and winding descent.
Past the lakeside promenade at Weesen, you will arrive at the final stretch along the Linth Canal, which channels the river Linth from Lake Walen to Lake Zurich. After this canal was built, the level of Lake Walen dropped by around five metres. This protects Walenstadt and Weesen from flooding. This rather short stage, at just 22 kilometres, ends at Ziegelbrücke railway station.
