Intro
From the scenic town of Thun by the same-named lake, the route heads up towards the Gurnigel Pass into the untouched Alpine foothills of the Gantrisch region. Panoramic single trails lead into the Fribourg Alps and Lake Schwarzsee.
Description
The town and the lake of Thun form the gateway to the Bernese Oberland and the start of this long, physically challenging stage. A warm-up is called for: Past the residential area and through Allmendingen, you reach Amsoldingen and its castle and the more than 1,000-year-old church. The Amsoldingersee and Übeschisee lakes are also located here, but you barely see them. Both are privately owned and so not accessible. The lake shore becomes fens and provides a habitat for numerous bird species.
The route continues at a leisurely pace past small hamlets and agricultural areas. When you reach Blumenstein, you’ve properly warmed up and the long climb follows. It’s around 1,000 metres of elevation through the Bluemistei forest up to the Tschingelhütte and the Gurnigel Pass You’re getting closer to the Gantrisch, Ochse and Homad. The pass also forms the watershed between the Gürbe, Sense and Schwarzwasser rivers. The area’s beautiful forests, fens and certain upland moors are impressive.
The pass road is a pleasant ride: through the forest for just under eight kilometres, with many stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Above Ottenleuebad, you switch onto a path. The stretch along the ridge is briefly technically challenging but manageable. In the distance, you can already make out the destination for this stage: the Schwarzsee lake. You descend across gravel roads and pastures to Obersti Site, and from here on surfaced road to where the Kalte Sense (“Cold Sense”) and Warme Sense (“Warm Sense”) rivers merge.
You still have six kilometres and 200 metres of elevation ahead of you. They won’t be an easy ride. But the path and later the beautiful gravel road, the rushing Sense river and the view of the mountains sweeten the climb. Your destination for this stage is the idyllic Schwarzsee lake. Legend has it that the lake’s waters are so dark because a giant once washed his dirty feet in them.
