Panorama Bike
Overview
Intro
A stage through Switzerland’s founding cantons – Schwyz, Nidwalden and Obwalden. After a steep ascent and scenic views on the descent, you take the ferry from Gersau to Beckenried and then pedal past attractive farmsteads to Sarnen.
Description
This stage begins in Schwyz, the lively, historic small town in the canton of the same name. The ascent starts soon after you’re in gear: Around 1000 metres in altitude up to the Gätterli Pass. Despite the effort, you can enjoy views over Lake Uri and back to the Kleiner and Grosser Mythen. From Stockflue, the surfaced road becomes a gravel road, while Lake Uri gives way to Lake Zug and Lake Lauerz. With the Rigi in sight, you soon reach the Gätterli Pass.
You catch brief glimpses of Lake Lucerne during the following fast-paced descent. The 700 metres in altitude are soon behind you, and you cycle along surfaced roads past farms, meadows and short stretches of woodland. From Gersau, the stage runs directly along the shore of Lake Lucerne. Then, it’s time to take things even slower: Waiting for the boat, enjoying the scenery and recharging on the crossing to Beckenried.
While you don’t gain much altitude on the way to Sarnen, you do cover almost 25 kilometres. You pass by Buochs Airport, which is used for civilian flights, and reach Stans. The Winkelried monument commemorating the Battle of Sempach, the baroque building and the church with Romanesque bell tower hark back to days gone by. You follow a longer stretch along the main road before the route branches into the Chernwald forest. Once you are through this, you pass Kerns and shortly afterwards, you reach the end of this stage, in Sarnen.
