Rigi Lake View Walk
Overview
Intro
This easy high-altitude walk on the queen of mountains features magnificent views out over the Swiss plateau to the Black Forest, the Vosges mountains and the Alps, as well as a breath-taking bird’s-eye view of Lake Lucerne and Lake Zug.
Description
Enjoy a feast for the eyes with minimum effort – the entire trail is a gentle descent. The panoramic view from the lookout at Känzeli even inspired Queen Victoria, who praised this spectacular location in her diary when she visited back in 1868.
From Rigi Kulm, the hike runs down to Rigi Staffel and passes the tracks of the Rigi Railway on the way to Rigi Staffelhöhe. This is the destination of the cog railway from Vitznau, opened in 1871 and Europe’s first mountain railway. The panoramic terrace offers a view over the Swiss plateau and the Alps. From Staffelhöhe, the trail makes its way through the forest and across meadows to the lookout at Känzeli. The final section to Rigi Kaltbad is leisurely and straightforward, with a constant view of Lake Lucerne.
In Rigi Kaltbad, all eyes are drawn to the Mineral Baths & Spa, whose modern architecture blends pleasingly with the landscape. It continues the resort’s bathing tradition that stretches back 600 years. At the time, Rigi Kaltbad was renowned in Switzerland and beyond as a pilgrimage site.
