Description
Even on the journey through the wintry Glarus region with its ever-narrowing valleys and majestic mountain scenery, everyday life fades away. The ride on the Elm-Ämpächli gondola then offers a first impression of the experience to come: far below the six-seater cabins, a few sledgers can be spotted as they thunder down into the valley.
On arrival at the Ämpächli mountain station, the eye is first drawn to the jagged outline of the Segnes Pass and towards Martin’s Hole on the far side of the valley. The toboggan run begins nearby, starting with a steep and twisting descent through the snowy pine forest. After a few challenging bends, the course heads out of the valley in a wide arc, passing farms and mountain huts cloaked in snow. After Gerstboden and a change of direction, sledgers ride into the shade, which often causes the route to freeze – and makes the toboggan go faster.
In any case, the toboggan run has virtually no flat passages, so the altitude difference of around 470 metres can generally be covered at a fair pace. This is certainly true of the final run to the finish, right next to the valley station of the Elm-Ämpächli gondola, which carries visitors back up the mountain.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
