The Verena Gorge and Hermitage at a glance
The Verena Gorge is located on the outskirts of the city of Solothurn in the canton of the same name. A well-developed path leads 2 kilometres along the Verenabach to the hermitage of St. Verena. There are the Verena and St. Martin's Chapels as well as the Magdalene Grotto. The gorge is accessible all year round.
What to experience
Walk through the Verena Gorge (20-40 minutes)
A hiking trail leads from Solothurn's old town to the entrance of the gorge. From there you follow the path along the Verena Lake. High rock faces line the path, where memorial plaques commemorate Solothurn personalities. On the way you will pass wooden bridges and footbridges. In summer, it is pleasantly cool in the gorge.
- Good to know: The path is not barrier-free, but suitable for prams.
- Tip: By bus line 4 to St. Niklaus shorten the walk.
Visit the hermitage and chapels
At the end of the gorge, a clearing opens up with the hermitage, the Verena Chapel and the Martin's Chapel. Since 1588, hermits have lived here. In addition to the chapels, you will find the Magdalene Grotto and the Mount of Olives Grotto with figures of saints made of wood and plaster.
- Good to know: At St. Martin's Chapel, you can look inside through a window.
- Tip: You can book guided tours and torchlight hikes with Solothurn Tourism.
