Dreamy summer stories

A valuable heritage

Valais summers are hot and dry! Farmers in the region have constructed spectacular irrigation channels over the years to ensure a sufficient supply of water for their meadows and animals. These channels transport the precious commodity from the mountains to the mountain villages. Once there, the water is distributed using conventional irrigation methods. Organic farmer Franziska Schmid has learnt these methods herself, preserving this valuable cultural heritage for the next generation.

Switzerland’s wine park

Valais is famous for the amount of sun it receives and its lovely wines. In the winegrowing village of Salgesch in the middle of the Pfyn-Finges Nature Park, Luc Mounir and his family grow top-quality wines. They primarily work with traditional varieties and follow principles based on nature – something appreciated by both future generations of wine lovers and visitors to the nature park.

The grain whisperer

Cédric Chezeaux is living his dream: Fifteen years ago he turned his back on conventional agriculture. Since then he has been cultivating old, almost forgotten grains of organic quality near Romainmôtier. Today people from all over Europe visit him in search of genuine, traditional foods and uncompromising quality. The unique landscape of the Vaud Jura ensures that they usually stay a little longer.
