Overview

Intro

19 May 2018 is the 100th anniversary of the death of the famous Swiss painter Ferdinand Hodler. Several Swiss museums are commemorating his outstanding work with major special exhibitions.

Ferdinand Hodler (1853–1918) shaped the image and identity of Switzerland with his pictures more than any other painter. At the same time, he was one of the most important artists in the transitional phase between the 19th century and modern art.

This is particularly clear in his later works. His paintings repeatedly deal with topics that preoccupied him throughout his entire life, presenting series and variations on these themes. Take, for example, his approach to self-portraits, his legendary depictions of the Swiss Alpine world and his fascination with women and death. His works became increasingly radical and abstract, making him a forerunner of modern painting.

To mark the 100th anniversary of his death, several Swiss museums will be dedicating major special exhibitions to this world-famous artist.

An Encounter
April 21 - August 19, 2018

This exhibition is the first encounter of the two icons of 20th century Swiss art in a single show: Ferdinand Hodler and Alberto Giacometti. 2018 marks the 100th anniversary of Ferdinand Hodler’s death – a reason to honour the oeuvre of this outstanding Swiss painter at the beginning of modernism and to approach his work with a radically different view. In a dialogue with Alberto Giacometti, one of the most important sculptors of the 20th century, Hodler is not negotiated in the context of his own era, but re-examined completely.
