Intro

September 13, 2026 – September 22, 2026

Armenia, located at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, is a mountainous country. Numerous monasteries and khachkars (cross-stones) bear witness to the rich cultural tradition of this first Christian state in the world. Politically and socially, the country is today striving towards the West. At the same time, there are strong conservative forces, and the lost Karabakh war is leading to social tensions. Travel highlights include the vibrant capital Yerevan and nearby Etchmiadzin, the center of Armenian Christianity, Lake Sevan, one of the largest mountain lakes in the world, as well as the mountainous landscape of the "Armenian Switzerland." Encounters with local civil society and religious representatives provide insights into current social, political, and religious developments in Armenia.
