The La Fille-Dieu abbey is situated right on the Way of St. James and is a welcoming haven for visitors as they can find comfort in the stillness away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Make sure to visit the convent’s shop because they sell the most divine mustard. It is prepared according to an old recipe that was found in the monastery.
Anyone can stay the night here, stroll through its beautiful gardens and see how the sisters live. Here, you can find solace in this secluded oasis of peace and joy. The nuns make eucharistic bread, four kinds of mustard, sauces and marmalades, which are available to buy in the abbey shop.
The monastery was founded by three young women from the region in the 13th century. It was first inhabited by Cistercian nuns, and since 1906 has been affiliated with the Trappists. Wars, fires and political events resulted in changes to the buildings over the years. The renovations that began in 1990 returned the church to its original form.
The glass windows by English artist Brian Clarke serve as a modern counterpoint to the ancient walls of the church. The works are pleasing because of their sober nature and allusion to hope.
