Since the mid-1960s, American Bruce Nauman has been creating broadly conceived works, including sculptures, performances, neons, video installations, and others. A number of his works are centred on plays on words, where the meaning of the words is questioned by the visual stimulation of the repeatedly flashing writing. This also applies to this neon piece, consisting of seven English word pairs. The classification of each a virtue (capitalized) is overlaid by that of a vice (capitalized italics).
