The Gotthard Post
The painting “St. Gotthard Stagecoach” is one of Switzerland’s most popular artworks, because it shows some of the Alpine country’s essential aspects. The stagecoach, now the epitome of romantic serenity, had been capable of crossing the mountains for only a few decades at that time. Koller illustrated how the stagecoach quickened the pace of transportation by showing it passing a herd of cows while hurtling down the mountain. The difference in the movements between the slow cows and the fast coach heighten the dramatic effect.
