At 900 m.a.s.l., Gonten high valley near Appenzell is tailor-made for cross-country skiing. Situated on the northern face of the Kronberg, the valley offers relatively reliable snow and a terrain of Nordic character.
Trails of various lengths and degrees of difficulty pass through extensive meadowland and forest as well as an exceptionally lovely protected tract of high moorland. Full cross-country equipment can be rented at the "Wachshöttli" in Gonten.
