Intro

Die Ausstellung ist erster Meilenstein in der Neu­gestaltung der Ethnologie des Kulturmuseums.

Die Hauptausstellung 2025 taucht ein in die Entstehungs­geschichte der ethnologischen Sammlung und erzählt vom globalen Netz­werk der Stadt St. Gallen. Im Zentrum steht die 1878 gegründete Ostschweizerische Geographisch-Commercielle Gesellschaft. Eng verwoben mit der Textil­industrie, suchte die Gesell­schaft nach neuen Absatz­märkten in Übersee und verband ihre wirt­schaftlichen Interessen mit einer umfassenden wissenschafts- und gesellschafts­orientierten Sammlungs­tätigkeit. Sie trug zur Gründung des 1921 eröffneten Kultur­museums bei. Die Ausstellung ist erster Meilenstein in der Neu­gestaltung der Ethnologie des Kulturmuseums.
