In 1929, from his residence in Montagnola, Nobel Prize–winning poet and painter Hermann Hesse published the small volume “A Library of World Literature”. In it, he outlined a personal selection of essential works, carefully chosen over the years, and offered practical advice on how to create one’s own library. Almost a century later, the literary landscape has changed profoundly: voices that long went unheard are now emerging – women writers, marginalized communities, indigenous cultures. This evolution raises a crucial question: what would a library of world literature look like today? Which works should be included – and which perhaps no longer? What criteria should guide us in rethinking the canon?
In this inspiring encounter, poet and philosopher Stella N’Djoku will take the audience on a journey through books that have left a deep impression on her. With each new edition of “Hesse Now – Una biblioteca della letteratura universale”, Hesse’s library is symbolically expanded with titles that reflect the transformations of our time.
With the following guests: Rosy Nervi, Jamileh Amini, Graziano Martignoni.
In collaboration with LaFilanda, Mendrisio.
